Loreto is a low-rise town on the Sea of Cortez, on the east coast of Baja California Sur. It has the first mission of the Californias, a five-island marine national park out front and a mountain range rising more than 5,500 feet at its back. It is small: you can walk it in a morning. And it is probably the quietest corner of the whole peninsula.

Where Loreto is
Loreto sits halfway down the Baja California peninsula, on the Gulf of California. It is about 220 miles north of La Paz and a little over 700 miles south of Tijuana on the Transpeninsular Highway. It has an international airport four miles from downtown, which solves access without driving the length of the peninsula. It was the first capital of the Californias
The mission of Nuestra Senora de Loreto was founded in 1697, and the expeditions that established the rest of the missions, all the way into Alta California, set out from here. There is a marine national park out front
Bahia de Loreto National Park protects roughly 780 square miles of sea and five islands: Coronado, Del Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat and Santa Catalina. It is a Pueblo Magico that is still a town
There is no traffic, no continuous hotel strip, no avenue of nightclubs. You walk the malecon at sunset, the plaza benches are taken by neighbors and the restaurants close early. Anyone looking for a heavy nightlife scene has the wrong destination; anyone looking for quiet finds it on day one.
Weather and the best time to go
Loreto has a dry climate with sun nearly year-round. Broadly:
- December to March: mild days, cool nights and the sea at its clearest. Blue whale season and the best time for walking and exploring the sierra.
- April to June: the best balance. Warm water, calm wind and fewer people than in winter. Peak fishing season.
- July to September: strong midday heat and water at pool temperature. Ideal if the plan is to get in the sea and stay there.
- October and November: quiet, very pleasant months, with the sea still warm and softer rates.

How many days you need

Where to stay
The historic center and the malecon hold almost everything, so staying on the bay saves driving and lets you get out on the water early. Our rooms face the sea, ten minutes from the marina and a few steps from the plaza, with a pool, beach club, wellness area and food service on site.
Frequently asked questions
Is Loreto safe to travel to?
It is a small town where people walk the malecon at night as a matter of course. The usual travel precautions apply: leave nothing visible in the car and let the front desk know if you head into the sierra on your own.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for downtown, the marina or the beach. It is worth it if you plan to drive to San Javier or the southern beaches on your own. We can arrange a rental at the front desk.
Can you swim in the sea year-round?
Yes, though in January and February the water is cold for most people. From May through November getting in is comfortable without a wetsuit.
How is it different from Los Cabos or La Paz?
Scale and pace. Loreto has a living historic center, a marine park twenty minutes away and no tourist pressure. It is a nature and quiet destination, not a chain resort one.
